Self-discipline
At a glance, discipline may seem to be an odd thing to talk about when trying to save electricity. However, discipline is possibly the simplest way that you can have a significant impact on your power consumption. Your habits are one of the biggest factors that will determine how much power you use.
This isn't as simple as just remembering to turn lights off when you leave a room, although that is part of it. It's about optimising your habits to allow the maximum amount of downtime possible for your electrical appliances. Air conditioning is a good example. On top of just turning your air conditioning off when you don't need it, there are things that you can do to reduce the amount of time that you need it on. Windows and curtains are excellent ways to block air and light or to let it flow. They can let heat escape when it's hot inside or block it when it's hot outside. Even though this won't cool your home as much as air conditioning, it will reduce the work that your air conditioner needs to do.
There are countless ways that this idea can be applied to any number of things. By making a habit of identifying where you could be more efficient and making changes, you'll be able to reduce your power consumption.

Efficient devices
Another way that you can reduce energy consumption is by being conscious of how energy efficient your electric devices are. Even things as simple as light bulbs will have differences in how much energy they use over time. By choosing to buy things that are more energy-efficient, you can reduce power usage, even without reducing appliance usage. There are, however, some caveats to this. The first issue is with money. Energy-efficient appliances can be more expensive than their counterparts. This can make choosing the energy-efficient option less viable for a lot of people, especially if they are saving power to save money. The second thing to consider is that a device that uses less power in the same amount of time will not necessarily save you power. It's also important to consider the output of the appliance and what it's used for. If a device has a lower output, depending on what it's used for, you may have to use it for longer. This can end up using more power. Despite all of this, if you are able to, choosing more energy-efficient options when buying appliances will generally reduce power usage.
Servicing
Maintaining your electrical appliances well can make a big difference to your power usage. Over time, appliances become less efficient as they accumulate wear and tear. By performing maintenance, you ensure that they are as efficient as possible for as long as possible. This is especially true of appliances that use a lot of power as they usually have a fan or other cooling system. Fan-based cooling systems accumulate dust that can interfere with cooling.
This results in the fan having to work harder to achieve the same result, significantly increasing power consumption. This is just one example of how maintenance can save you electricity; this applies to all sorts of different appliances. You even get the added benefits of your appliances lasting longer and working better.
